Golden Eagle program adds Cincinnati area standout Laura Tyburski

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – An outside hitter and defensive specialist who earned honorable mention all-state honors and was one of the premiere players in the Cincinnati area, Laura Tyburski is Tennessee Tech's first volleyball signee for 2003-2004.

Although she was recruited by former coach Jennie Gilbert before her retirement in December, Tyburski's official signing was announced this week by first-year Golden Eagle coach John Blair.

"I know Laura is a solid athletic player who is technically sound, and she's very competitive," said Blair. "I think she will be a real asset to our program, and will also be a successful student."

The daughter of Joe and Sue Tyburski of Hamilton, Ohio, Laura plans to major in engineering.

In addition to her four letters on the volleyball court for coach Tracey Kornan, the 5-foot-9 Tyburski also lettered three years as a power forward on the Lakota High School girl's basketball team.

A product of the same high school that produced former Tech all-OVC hitter Lisa Dissel, Tyburski was named second-team all-city and honorable mention all-state following her senior season in 2002. She was twice an honorable mention all-city selection as a sophomore and junior, and also received three first-team all-conference awards.

Effective in all phases of the game, she had a .310 hitting percentage, 28 service aces and 209 digs, and averaged 1.9 blocks per game as a senior, netting her Player of the Year honors in the Greater Miami Conference.
